Why digital Regular Giving still has huge untapped potential

Digital fundraising is often discussed as the future of Regular Giving acquisition. But the reality across the Australian sector is more complicated than many people assume.

The latest benchmarking analysis shows that digital channels still contribute relatively small acquisition volumes compared to Face to Face fundraising. Yet despite those lower volumes, digitally acquired supporters are often delivering strong long-term value outcomes.

That creates an important opportunity for charities willing to think patiently.

One of the biggest mistakes organisations make with digital acquisition is expecting immediate scale. Strong digital Regular Giving programs usually take years of testing, optimisation and refinement before they mature properly. The charities performing best in this area are typically investing heavily in data quality, supporter journeys, creative testing and communication strategy over long periods of time.

Digital also allows charities to engage supporters differently. The onboarding journey can feel faster, more personalised and more integrated with ongoing stewardship. That matters because donor expectations are changing rapidly, particularly among younger supporters.

At the same time, digital should not be viewed as a replacement for traditional acquisition channels. Face to Face fundraising still dominates volume across the sector. The smarter approach is usually diversification rather than substitution.

The organisations likely to succeed long-term are the ones building balanced acquisition portfolios. They are maintaining volume through established channels while steadily improving quality and resilience through digital growth.

Digital fundraising still has enormous potential across Regular Giving.

But the charities that benefit most from it will probably be the ones willing to invest with patience rather than expecting overnight transformation.
